In January 2020, Paramount Pictures revealed their plans for the film, with Fey returning to pen the screenplay and also serving as a producer alongside Lorne Michaels, who helmed the 2004 production. Composer Jeff Richmond and lyricist Nell Benjamin were back to tweak their tunes from the stage musical, with Richmond also creating the film's score. Casting kicked off in December 2022, and the main shoot unfolded in New Jersey from March to April 2023. Initially slated for a debut on Paramount+, the studio decided to give it a theatrical release following encouraging test screenings.

The grand unveiling of Mean Girls occurred at the AMC Lincoln Square in New York City on January 8, 2024, before hitting cinemas nationwide on January 12, courtesy of Paramount Pictures. While critics had varied opinions on the film, it managed to rake in over $104 million worldwide, surpassing its $36 million budget.
